On a rare sunny morning last week I investigated an unfamiliar bird call in one of Plumpton’s old abandoned clay pits. The calling was
repeated for over 30 minutes and came from multiple sources. Patient watching eventually revealed a glimpse of a Water Rail through the tangle of willow stems, confirming my best guess. Online research confirmed that I was listening to four male birds. With no foliage on the trees and numbers boosted by winter migrants, now is your best chance to spot this species.
