Earlier this month we planted some buckthorns in the small wood that we manage for the landowner with the sole aim of increasing its biodiversity value. This shrub, or small tree, is found in a variety of habitats, including as an undershrub in woodland (usually Ash and Oak), in scrub and hedgerows and in fen-carr and damp Alder woods. It is the larval food of the Brimstone (the original 'butter-coloured' fly) and females have a remarkable ability to find these infrequent trees in the landscape.
It is important when planting native trees to source saplings from local seed stock. In the case of Plumpton, Forestry Commission seed zone 405 covers the southeast corner of England. With some effort, we managed to find saplings grown from seed collected within 20 miles of Plumpton.
