Sad death toll of toads on the roads around Plumpton in recent weeks. The cold weather delayed their annual mating migration so when the warmer weather finally (briefly) appeared, they set off for their mating grounds in greater than usual numbers over a more concentrated period of time. The result was a very high death toll on the roads. We counted hundreds dead at various crossing points, mainly on Plumpton Lane and South Road but in smaller numbers elsewhere.
We've monitored the problem and notified ESCC Highways department, in the hope that we can get warning signage put up for next year. You can find the full report on our News pages.
