The first parish swift was reported to me on 8 May. The swift caller is now operating again in the church to try to attract swifts to the nest chambers we have installed there, but it may take some time, since swifts are so scarcely around the village these days.
Buried deep in a wood at the top of the parish on the morning of 3 May, I was sure I could hear a crane or two calling somewhere around. By the time I got out of the wood it had stopped. We will never know – but, a common crane was seen near Bexhill the next day!
